They reached the 2011/2012 Uefa Europe League group stage by defeating Hearts over two legs, but finished third in their group and therefore didn't make the knockout stages of the tournament. The club entered the League Cup in the third round and were defeated by Stoke City on penalties, as well as the FA Cup where they reached the semi-finals but were defeated 5–1 by Chelsea.

Tottenham finished the season in 4th place after occupying 3rd place for most of the season. From late February onwards their season collapsed, starting with a 5–2 defeat to local London rivals Arsenal, who they had been 10 points ahead of before the game. Many Tottenham fans had been taunting Arsenal fans with the phrase "Mind The Gap", a reference to both their position above Arsenal in the league and the announcement on the London tube system.

After their negative spiral, the phrase is now used by Arsenal fans referring to Tottenham, who haven't finished above Arsenal since 1995. Their last game of the Premier League season resulted in a 2–0 victory against Fulham.
