Chelsea qualified straight to Group F of the 2010/2011 Champions League, thanks to winning the Premier League in the previous season. Marseille, Spartak Moscow and Croatian side Zilina were their opponents. Chelsea were in excellent form at Stamford Bridge, recording wins in all of their home games and scoring freely. Away from home, they were defeated at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille but managed to overcome Zilina and Spartak Moscow on their travels to ensure they would qualify into the knockout stage as group winners.

In the second round, Chelsea faced FC Copenhagen for a place in the quarter-finals. With the first leg to be played in Denmark, Nicolas Anelka scored twice to earn his team a valuable away win. At the return leg in London, Copenhagen proved much more difficult to beat and the match ended in a 0-0 draw sending Chelsea through to the next round against fellow English league rivals Manchester United. A single goal from Wayne Rooney in the first leg, and a goal each from Hernandez and Ji Sung Park in the second leg allowed Man Utd to progress through to the semi-finals, eliminating Chelsea from the tournament.
