The 2023–24 season proved to be extremely difficult for the club, as they went through three different coaches – Rudi Garcia, a returning Walter Mazzarri, and Francesco Calzona; this managerial instability, as well as the new hires largely not performing to the club's expectations, led the Azzurri to finish 10th in the league, 41 points behind eventual champions Inter.
In Europe, the club passed the group stage of the 2023–24 UEFA Champions League in a group with Real Madrid, Union Berlin and Braga, but were ultimately eliminated by Barcelona in the round of 16.
