On 12 May 2022, Fleetwood appointed former Celtic player Scott Brown as head coach. Despite predictions that Fleetwood would be relegated that season, Fleetwood finished the 2022–23 season in 13th place with 57 points. They also had a memorable FA Cup run reaching the fifth round of the FA Cup, two rounds further than they had ever been. They were knocked out by Burnley away at Turf Moor in a 1-0 defeat after a 90th minute goal.

On 26 May 2023, Andy Pilley stepped down as Fleetwood Town chairman (in July 2023, he was jailed for 13 years after being found guilty of fraud offences relating to corporate energy contracts), with Steve Curwood becoming interim chairman. Fleetwood confirmed that the club was up for sale and that it had started discussions with the EFL regarding a change of ownership and control.
