Lyon had a successful 2003/04 campaign winning Ligue 1 for the third successive season by three points over Paris Saint-Germain. Djibril Cissé was an important player in the team by scoring 26 goals in the league.
Excellent performances in the Champions League by Juninho and Florent Malouda meant Lyon finished top of their tough group ahead of both Bayern Munich and Celtic. After defeating Real Sociedad in the round of 16 they eventually lost to eventual champions Porto in the quarter-finals.
