Parmalat's sponsorship ended in 2000, leaving Palmeiras in dire straits. After reaching the 2001 Copa Libertadores semi-finals (where they lost to the Boca Juniors), the club had a bad 2002 season that ended in relegation to the Série B, but immediately returned in 2004.
The 2004 and 2005 seasons were rather successful, with the team finishing in 4th both years and qualifying for the Libertadores in 2005 and 2006. Palmeiras was eliminated by rivals São Paulo in the Round of 16 in both years.
