Rangers won their seventh domestic treble in manager Alex McLeish's first full season in charge, having taken over from Dick Advocaat the previous season. The league championship was won on goal difference in the last match of the season with a 6–1 win against Dunfermline Athletic.

Caniggia appeared in three World Cups, and was a member of both rival clubs River Plate and Boca Juniors. At the 1990 FIFA World Cup, Caniggia scored two goals to help Argentina reach the final but was suspended for the final against West Germany.
