In the 2001/2002 season, with Héctor Cúper, Inter Milan came near to Scudetto: like 1997-98 season, it was the closest chance since 1989. The squad was built with the purchases of Francesco Toldo, Marco Materazzi and Mohamed Kallon in add to Javier Zanetti, Luigi Di Biagio and Christian Vieri.

Inter reached the first position on March 24, after 3-1 win over Roma: before playing the last game, Inter still had one point over Juventus and two points over Roma. However, losing in Rome against Lazio Inter lost the chance to get the title: winning their matches, Juventus and Roma came first and second so Inter was third.

They also played in UEFA Cup, reaching semi-finals: Feyenoord defeated Inter, after a 1-0 win and a 2-2 draw.
