Coleman suffered a fractured tibia and fibula in his right leg following a dangerous challenge from Neil Taylor whilst on international duty with Ireland in March 2017 and was unlikely to return to action until 2018. It was announced a few days after his injury that FIFA would pay his basic salary for the duration of his rehabilitation.

Coleman made his Everton return on 31 January 2018, in a 2–1 win over Leicester City.

Coleman became Everton club captain in August 2019, following Phil Jagielka's departure after a 12-year tenure.
