Ahead of the 2017/18 season, Shelvey changed his squad number from 12 to 8. On 13th August, in Newcastle United's first match back in the Premier League against Tottenham Hotspur, Shelvey was sent off three minutes into the second half of the match, for stamping on Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli.
