Beckham was partially fit by the time of the 2002 World Cup held in Japan and South Korea, and played in the first match against Sweden. After the events of four years earlier, Beckham achieved a degree of revenge over Argentina by scoring the winning goal with a penalty, causing Argentina to fail to qualify for the knockout stage.
England defeated Denmark in the second round with Beckham providing an assist in a 3-0 win, and were knocked out of the tournament in the quarter-finals by eventual winners Brazil after Ronaldinho scored the winner.
