On the last day of the 1992/93 season, the team avoided relegation back to the third tier, but after a poor start to the 1993–94 season Terry Cooper was replaced by Barry Fry.

The change did not prevent relegation, but Fry's first full season brought promotion back to the second tier as champions, and victory in the Football League Trophy at Wembley, beating Carlisle United with a Paul Tait golden goal, completed the "lower-league Double". After one more year, Fry was sacked to make way for the return of Trevor Francis.
