Before the season Bayern did a major restructuring of their team, releasing or retiring nine players, while adding ten others to their squad. Luca Toni and Franck Ribéry headlined the signings. The season started with Bayern winning the DFB-Ligapokal, followed by a shootout win in the DFB-Pokal against Wacker Burghausen on 6 August 2007. On the first day of the league Bayern achieved a 3–0 victory over Rostock, thereby securing the first spot right from the start.

As the season went on Bayern continued to stay in the first spot, eventually winning the championship. Bayern also won the cup, thereby completing the double. International success was thwarted by Zenit St. Petersburg, though, when Bayern suffered a 4–0 defeat in the second leg of the semi-final after a draw at home. This was Oliver Kahn's last season with FC Bayern Munchen.
